Got The New Engine In

well last sunday (the 16th) i finally got my engine put in and running. i put in a comp computer controlled cam
Lift: .425''/.440''
Duration @ .050'': 206°/212°
RPM Range: 1000-5000 its nothing to big but its got the perfect rom range i was lookin for bc i dont run my truck over 5k mainly bc i dont really kno where the redline would be, everytime i floor it itll shift at every 5k so i jus dont run it over that, but while im on that point does neone know wut a pretty high rpm is that i couldrun it to with out hurting it to much?
but neways i also put a set of dynomax standard series headers on and my k&n aircharger element. also bc of the cam i put in a high volume oil pump made by melling. and wow this thing gives off some awesome pressue its bouncing off the gauge, when adjusting valves the clip keptcoming off and oil was shooting out EVERYWHERE it was great. but so far iv only been running straight headers andits LOUD havnt made it back to the muffler shop yet, but with almsot no torque bc of the very low back pressure the truck runs damn quick. i already have a dual outlet muffler put on from the old engine when i got the exhaust done now me n my dad r thinking of putting another dual outlet muffler on and having four tips out the back? wut do u guys think? id think itd bekinda cool bc u dont see it to often around here. so now that im throught bs-ing i got some questions?
1-where can i find a new gasket for my oil cooler? autozone n advance dont carry it havnt tried napa tho?
2- also i was told by a few ppl to use a wix oil filter bc the oil pump has such high volume i use fram now they said nothing wrong with fram jus wix would hold up better, also wut about royal purple synthetic oil, and where do i find it? autozone n advancedont have it. i jus ahve valvoline max life in it now, the engine isnt brand new its outta 91 chevy with about 85k miles on it.
well lemme tell ya the engine looks great its chevy red orange with some chrome on it and the brackets n pulleys r black with black ceramin coated headers. well i think thas all the questions for now?

the rpm limit really depends on what block you have.
i have heard that a small block can take very short amounts of up to 8 or 9 thousand rpm, and i know ive gotten my old 350 pretty close to that, since with my 3 speed turbo 400 i had the speedo reading 60 miles an hour in FIRST gear.

the small blocks can rev pretty damn high

big blocks on the other hand, they cant rev as high. i dont know the exact redline, but a friend of mine says he would never rev his 454 over 5500 i think he said or maybe it was 6000 i dont remember for sure.

just plain old common sense when it comes down to it, a big block has larger parts and heavyer rotating assemblages and whatnot and all the centrifugal force is a lot more on the big blocks than the small blocks.

as for the oil pressure, i would be worried if the pressure is too high because thats probably not too good for the engine, especially if its off the guage at idle with the oil warmed up lol

well iknew thata big block and small block have different rpm ranges yea thas common sense, i was jus wondering wut the redline was, and theoil pump is a high volume high pressure pump the oil pressure isnt thathigh at idle its high when i accelerate. but my trans is out now so i have some other problems to take care of at the moment

It's a TIGHT new engine. What weight oil are you running?

Late models are designed and built with clearances for 5W-30 oil. Some people swear by Amsoil's 0W-30, but don't use any synthetic 'til the engine's broken in (3-5,000 miles).

Some of the GOOD mechanics I know insist on putting 20W-50 in their new engine installations. The pressure gauge then reads like you describe.

I'll go with Bill Fisher and Smokey Yunick. Ten pounds per 1,000 RPM is enough. Really high pressures will cause leaks and/or blow off your oil filter.

well the engine wasnt completely rebuilt we jus took it apart n cleaned the heads and stuff nothing major left the pistons in, im using 10w30 valvoline max life right now untill i change my oil i wanna put in royal purple synthetic oil

first royal purple is not true synthetic and fram filters suck card board media go napa gold made by wix good stuff

ya i dont like fram much either it always leaks but iv been trying to find a wix filter just havnt been that lucky yet, but i gotta get money first for an oil change havnt been able to save a lil money

K & N (the air filter people) make a line of SUPER oil filters in the $10-$12 range. They'll take over 500psi without collapsing, install with a 1" wrench, etc. Should stand up to your hard-pumping engine's demands!
