How to take a cd player out?
Whats up guys, this isnt really my forum as i own a 240sx but i have a stealth question. My friend owns a 91 stealth r/t, he is losing his license for atleast 6 months-possibly a year. So he is selling his car, and he said i could have his pioneer head unit. We tried to take it out yesterday but we couldnt figure it out. We took 2 screws out behind the little colors that pop out just above the cd player. (one on the left, one on the right) and that did nothing. Can someone tell me how to get the head unit out? Does the whole center console thing around the shifter come out? if so how?
thanx guys p.s. if anyone is looking to buy a stealth....his is a 1991 red r/t...he just had a new motor proffesionaly installed w/ around 50k on it. New clutch and underdrive pulleys. I think he is asking 5-6k. |

Re: How to take a cd player out?
Well if its a custom cd player, then its custom installation so there wouldn't be any instructions anywhere for it. If it's like most installation kits there's usually bolts on the sides of the bracket that the cd player sits in...they also usually just slid straight out will a little wiggling, or a push from behind.

Re: How to take a cd player out?
this is easy. I figured it out after I took out the whole center console of my vehicle out
![]() there is a plastic piece that surrounds the head unit. just pull that off. there are 4 screws (1 in each corner) behind the plastic piece. unscrew them. voila.

Re: How to take a cd player out?
That's for the stock cd player, he's talking about a custom set-up I believe.

Re: How to take a cd player out?
all head units have to go into the same spot. that same spot has 4 screws. how do you think I put my Pioneer head unit in my car? I didn't throw it in the glove box.

Re: How to take a cd player out?
yeah, it all depends on the install....i used the stock mounting bracket...so you have to take out the 4 screws in the front to remove the head unit and lower bin. and then remove the screws on the sides of the mounting bracket into the head unit.
Usually aftermarket head units have the metal frame that the unit slides and locks into. ANd it comes with some sort of tool to slide into the frame to unlock the head unit from the mount. But again it all depends on the install and mounting bracket used.

Re: How to take a cd player out?
Just look under the trim for any screws, or you could wiggle it around and try to get a sense of where the remaining screws are holding it.

Re: How to take a cd player out?
if you take out those 4 screws, it will take out your head unit, since an aftermarket install harness usually snaps onto the stock mounting brace.
I have a pioneer head unit. it has a custom install. However, if I take out those 4 screws then the whole thing comes out. Yes, I would have to detach the custom mounting bracket as well, but it will still come out because those 4 scews is the foundation for the whole head unit install.

OK, I guess I'm wrong about how my head unit was installed, even though I put it in myself
Anyway, KaisenH you have any luck getting it out?

Re: How to take a cd player out?
I have installed head units and systems in my cars and my friends cars for years. I don't want to come across as "holier than thou", but I'm just saying, that no matter what the custom install, those 4 screws are the foundation for every install, since that is how you mount the head unit onto the vehicle. If it has a custom install like additional mounting brackets (like mine) you can still unscrew those four screws and take the whole thing apart as 1 piece, then just transfer it into the other car. If it doesn't mount correctly (since we are talking about 2 different cars) THEN you can take apart the custom mounting bracket and make one for the other car.

Re: How to take a cd player out?
My experiences have been the same as Gateway described...if it helps.

Gateway, you're being an idiot. I'm not denying that most installs may use those 4 screws but it seems you won't accept the idea that any install could be any differant. Listen carefully, I put my own head unit in and put it in in a way that doesn't just use those 4 screws. You can take those out and still won't be able to move the head unit a damn inch. Yes when I took the old aftermarket unit out, it came out with basically those 4 and the one in KaisenH's car may be the same but there's not some magical force keeping anyone from putting it in differantly. Bah, lol this thread is going further and further off topic.
