funny noise, and tranny I.D., and steering fix

Hey, ive got a 93 f-250 with the mighty 460 in it. its a 4 speed auto, but the problem is im having trouble locating info on what tranny it is. is it a c-6 or FMX like most other ford trucks im familliar with (pre 1970) or is it this 4L60E or something like that tranny that ive seen in some places. im trying to locate the proper high stall torque converter and shift kit/pack/valvebody/transbrake kit for it (needed for occasional towing but mostly for fun on the 1/4 mile) also, locating upgrades for the 460 is like looking for porsche parts at a VW dealer, very rare aparently. its the injected motor so aparently its different. although to my knowledge, the 460 block has remained largely unchanged since the 70s. i could change the heads, intake, and pretty much everything else in that motor, but then i would worry about smog, its a california truck so smog is an issue, infact, right now it sits with 6 degrees retarded timing to get past smog... terrible for power and economy, i really need to get under there and fix that.... as for the noise, it seems that idling in any drive gear and reverse there is a noise that I can best describe as a grinder or a saw. the moment i touch the gas, it goes away, im thinking that some how at idle fluid isint being pumped into the converter.... thats just my wild guess really. any ideas im open to. as for the steering, even with the tires fully balanced and new tie rods/ball joints and wheel bearings and proper alignment, there is still a massive wobble in the steering. ive herd of a fix invloving a shock absorber but i got that translated through my dad. hes not one ide trust with any sort of modification on a vehicle, though he can work wonders with a landscape.... anyway, thanks for any tips/tricks/advice/info.

It might be the E40D, i dont think it would be the c-6, the c-6 was used most often from '68 to 75ish.

yeah, they started making the 4R70W in '94, so it wouldn't be that. But the E4OD is your best bet. As far as 5 mpg, you won't find much better than than with a 460, you might want to start saving just for gas if you will drive that daily. (seeing that gas is rising in price.)
