Talking Problems With My Metro

hey there,

i have a 96' geo metro, 3 cyl. 6 TBI, 5 - Speed. this car is awsome on gas mileage (55 MPG). you get more horsepower out of a stick shift than a auto trans. Any who, the transmission in my car is making a chattering noise when i drive it. when i slow down too a stop, i can't get it into 1st, with out coming too a dead stop. the engine runs pretty solid, for 165,000 miles. but now i notice i'm leaking coolant somewhere in the engine, i dunno where its coming out of. the water pump seems too be dry, but i see coolant dripping from the oil pan.

those geo engines are like honda's they never die.

thanks for you help,
bill

Bill,
I'm with ya on Geo engines. I bought mine intending to keep it a few months. That was 7 years and 250,000 miles ago. I've never had a car that equalled my Geo. I'll die before it does.
About your problem. I can't answer, but I've been searching for my answer and I saw your problem addressed while I was looking. Do a search here and on Yahoo groups http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/...oclub/messages. It's there somewhere. Mike

It could be one of 2 things. Your gear lube is low/old(replace with 2.5qt of GM synchromesh), or your synchronizer and engaugement hub is wearing out for 1st. If the oil change doesn't work, it's only a matter of time before you lose 1st gear. Could be a week, could be 4 years from now. I would definately keep an eye on it tho. Metro transmissions are an easy find. Yours, being a 96 1.0, any transmission from 95-00 with 13" wheels and a 1.0 engine, will have the same gear ratios and final drive.

Re: Problems With My Metro

thanks for all your help, damnitbouy and geozukigti.

well this metro has been sitting in a barn for a year, and its in great shape. i think i'll do a tranny overhaul and clean out all the gunk build up. for the coolant leak i'll use a bottle of bar's stop leak. i'm thinkin theres an internal leak in the water pump.

If your leak is the waterpump seal, no sealer will work on it. It's not that bad to change, I'd just do it.

My Metro has been running hot at times at idle, the belt was squealing more than usual so I just tightened the crap out of it. I hope the bearings hold up! I just couldn't take the squealing any more when I first fire it up at 5.30 AM. Even if it was only for 30 seconds or so.

And the saga continues..............
