88 Cougar Digital Speedometer

I have a 1988 Mercury Cougar and the digital speedometer will work sometimes and sometimes it don't. Sometimes when I start the car it will come on and the next time I start it won't. It is a weird thing and im lost. Can someone help me figure this one out.

So did you ever find out what the problem is? I have a '89 cougar myself that I just replaced the head gaskets in and when I started it up at first the speedometer was working, but now it won't work for nothin. Any ideas?
