Sand blasting a rusty old 38 ...

Ok HELP!!!! WE have a old rusty 38.. we had to cut the bolts..took all the finders, runningboards, hood off It pretty rough but workable,,We aren't going stock. its all there, engine, tranny, rear end, it even has the chains to shut the tailgate, everything..The class is broken, the floorboard is rusted out, the wood in the bed is bad,, doors will need new skin in and out. Its a Westcoast truck 1 owner and has been parked in a barn for 20 years.. it was a work truck in its day. has some dents not bad... I guess thats about it... My question would be,,, SandBlasting it or walnut shells. or both how far down can you get with shells, Where do you get walnut shell I have looked on the web.. Any Help????

Don't sand blast it or walnut it, you will warp the panels... That said, first use a DA sander with 80 grit, then use a donkey wheel for the deep pitting, finish off with por15

Re: Sand blasting a rusty old 38 ...

Sadblasting is the true way to get rid of rust. The only problem is that you can warp the panels. So if you where to blast it be very careful and hold the tip back from the panel and keep moving.I never used shells so I can't help you there.

Re: Sand blasting a rusty old 38 ...

A 38 S-10 it must be the origional prototype. LOL

Both Rlith, and Movin2 are right
POR15 is GREAT. I just sprayed it on my Blazer and LOVE it. It's 1 tough coating
http://www.por15.com/

And if it was mine I'd use a DA sander for the flat area's that are still in fair shape, and a sandblaster in all the bad pitted areas.
But be really carefull with the sandblaster

Can you post your project as you go along?
MSN messenger has free space, called my space that's really easy to add photo's to.

Have fun and good luck!
