94 Escort Cranking, but won't start

I have a 94 Ford Escort that has a manual transmission. The gas gauge was messed up to begin with. So I can't tell if I am out of gas or not. I pulled into the gas station and parked. But I didn't turn the car off. The car cut off and I didn't realize it because I was listening to the radio. I tried to restart it and it cranked but wouldn't start. So I thought I ran out of gas. I put some gas in and it still won't start. The fuel pump is working because the fuel will spew out and from what was checked, the timing belt is fine. PLEASE HELP. Because we are stumped.

Tell us what size engine your Escort has......
Tell us what type of fuel injection....Central, SEFI etc.

You say gas spewed out......from where?
Can you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key 'On'
You say the timing belt is 'fine'....did you see it rotate when you tried to start it?

Have you checked to see if there is fire at the sparkplugs.
