Help needed plz(long write-up)

A while back my timing belt auto tensioner blew(the hydraulic). The car jumped. Now, Ive lined up all the tiiming marks perfect (crank, oil pump/silent shaft, and inner timing belt to the right silent shaft and cam gears). But the problem now is its shaking like crazy. The motor mounts are fine, and it seems like its not firin on all 4 cylinders and theres a real strong gas smell like its not burnin it all up. Each cylinder is getting spark, and i changed the plugs because when i disconnected the plug wire from the plug and lifted it out on the 3rd cylinder the rpms went up, but when i took out the 2nd cylinders' it didnt make any difference. The 1st and 4th pistons make the rpms drop. After i changed the plugs there is no change.

What could it be? Ive kept in mind i might have bent the valve(s). At idle it wants to die, but when i bring the rpms up it clears up a little. Are there any sensors that cou.lld have got screwed up?

~Thx in advance
Matt

run a compression test and that will tell you if you have bent any valves. about the shaking...you might have the silent shafts in 180 degrees backwards. there's a writeup about it in the chilton manual i have, i'll check when im at the shop later tonight and come back and explain it to you.

Theres a plug in the back of the block where you stick a screw driver in. The balance shaft is in the correct position if the screw driver goes in 2.4 inches. If its less, about 1 inch, the the b-shaft will have to be turned another rotation.

Since that plug sucks to get to twith the intake manifold in the way, there is another way to do it. Mind you the timing belt will have to be back off to do it. Take the oil pump sprocket and rotate it so the arrow is straight up. If you let it go and it rotates COUNTERclockwise the timing marks are correct. If not, then rotate it another 360 and try again.

That is if the shaking is because the b-shaft is out of phase. But by the sounds of it it could be shaking because the motor isn't running right. Are you absolutely positive, 100% that the timing is dead on? I say this because being one tooth off at the cams is really easy to do and it may look like they are dead on.

Thats what i was using...but its VERY possible that its 180 degress off. But i followef the steps of the book by taking off the plug on the side of the motor to check and i used an 8mm rod, and stuck it through, where i had it originally the rod wouldnt go in very much, i rotated it again, and it went through , so i pulled the rod outr and just let it go and it rotated clockwise a little. Lemme know if i missed something.

Looking at the belts, isnt it on the right side of the motor? Thats what i used, maybe thats where i went wrong?
EDIT>Thx so far.

Yeah, right below the intake manifold. Sounds like if your car dies at idle, its probly not the b-shaft making the car shake.

If you jumped timing, 99% chance you bent valves. Ask Jake about that one...happened to him like three times in one week

Do a compression test like gtthompson97 suggested, if you think it's something else.

When i get home today im goin to check the compression. And i never thought i didnt bend any valves.....just hoped i didnt. If i did, the local shop would charge about 800 to fix it, which is more than ive paid and put into the car.

Well. did the compresion test yesterday and heres what i found:
Cyl 1:120
Cyl 2:0
Cyl 3:140
Cyl 4:130

So i took off the valve cover and guess what i found...the 2 rockers on the intake for cyl 2 were off the valve spring and lifter. So today im gonna put them back on then torque the bearing caps back down, and see what its readin. I still may have bent a valve. Now...why did they come off? Collapsed spring? Hydraulic lifters shot? Or just a freak accident? I think that when it jumped ttime it hit the valve at just the right time and pushed back on the valve spring and pushed the rocker off? Im stumped.

Re: Help needed plz(long write-up)

The rockers are a very bad sign im sorry to say. When i took my valve cover off i found all 8 intake rockers off. After pulling the head, all 8 intake valves were bent.

I got the rockers back on and the T belt back on and tried to start it, no go...And just my luck while tightening the bolts on the bearing caps, i got one torqued down to about 10 of 15lbs, and it snapped off.Damit~
Well, looks like that head is comin off.

Thx for the quick info
Matt
