98 Lumina issues

I just bought a 98 lumina in Jan. one month after purchase my abs motor went out, the mechanic told me it would be fine without it, and he removed the whole motor and the fuse so that the light would not be on, now my transmission has went out. I have been told that since my car has traction control that when they removed my abs motor that messed up my traction control which in turn ruined my tranny. I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this. I can drive the car if i start in 1st and move up manually to overdrive. Does this mean the whole tranny has to be replaced or could it just be a link? I appriciate any help you can give me.

I would tend to agree with your mechanic that disconnected the ABS. The brakes are designed to work without the aid of the ABS function in the event the ABS fails anyway. While many of the cars systems are meant to enhance the cars basic functions, the design is that the car can still operate should some of them partially fail.

Its more likely a coincidence, but I would check all the connectors and vacuum hoses to and from the Tranny. Maybe your mechanic "bumped" one loose while under the hood and it took awhile to fall off. I doub't your tranny would even be shifting manually if it was shot.

Does the "checkengine" light come on? Any codes from the computer?

Here's some good things to check mentioned in another reply:
