97 Taurus - Headlights come on and flicker high beam

Just noticed that the lights on my 97 Taurus were on (not bright - maybe daytime running lights), and that they would flicker into a higher beam for a couple of seconds at a time. I thought I might have left the lights on, so I checked - I hadn't but the high beam light on the display was ON for some reason.

Was worried about running down the battery, so I started it up and went for a short drive. Everything is fine for now, but I'll have to disconnect the battery in case it acts up again.

Please let me know what this could be. I can't keep disconnecting my battery every time I park the car.

Sounds like your daytime running lamp module is failing. Replacing the module should repair it. To test it you would have to catch it happening then test if there is power coming from the module. Sorry I couldn't tell you which colour wire at the module to test or the location of module.Probably located in the right front fender, thats where the older taurus hid them.

I wonder if I disconnect a fuse for the DRL, it that would do the trick? I don't know which one, or where to find it, but maybe it would save me the cost of having to buy a DRL module.

Curiously, this happened last night and its been okay since.

I don't believe there is a fuse just for the DRL, You would have to disconnect the module by pulling the plug right at the module. The rest of the lamp system should still work after. Then make sure you put a good coating of grease on the connector and covering it up to prevent corrosion on the connector so when the day comes to install the new module, the connector will still be good.
Now to find the module, ask your dealer or maybe someone else on this forum could shed some light on that. I see your probably close to Donnelly Ford. They should be able and willing to tell you where it is.
Personally I would replace the module, It sure makes a difference in saving lives. Always Safety 1st.

Well, I disconnected the module for now, as I need some brake work done first and cost is a concern, but at least it's a solution for now.

I found a guy who'll replace the module for about 150 bucks, so I take care of it in a couple of weeks.

As for the saftey issue, I recognize it and so just keep my regular lights on, unless in bright sunlight (not too much here in Ottawa lately).
