I know this is a little bit off topic, but I feel it is somewhat relevant. Mods, feel free to delete this if I am out of line (I know you will if I am anyway
)So I decided to take the same technique that I use on my models, and use them on my 1:1 car. Some of you may remember that my technique involves using autmotive primers and laquers, usually Duplicolor. I usually color sand after about 4-6 coats of color, and follow them up with 6-8 coats of clear that is wet sanded, and then rubbed out with compound. I then polish with Zaino. I followed the same technique on my real car on two major body panels. I painted the two body panels, and the rest is the stock factory paint job. I`ll let everyone try to guess which two panels I painted. The painted panels now look better then the rest of the car. Also, keep in mind that this is a very limited production car (it is number 31 of only 500 made) and is in almost new condition, so my hand was a little shaky while spraying. Several times I thought to myself "what the *$#% am I doing?!?!?". I`ll post a pic of my 1/12 Monogram Corvette that I painted using the exact same technique at the end of this post.

You got one of them! The rear bumper was repainted. What made you guess that?

Re: Modeling techniques used on a real car!
No, but after looking at the pictures again, it looks like the drivers door is a slightly different shade than the rear fender. Not sure why that is. I never noticed that before.

Re: Modeling techniques used on a real car!
Nope. I guess these pics arent the best. But really, if you are standing right up next to it, it is hard to tell which parts have been painted.

Re: Modeling techniques used on a real car!
the bumper in one of the pics appeared to be a different shade, just a little bit darker than the surrounding panels. but other than that one picture it is undetectable. awesome job

Re: Modeling techniques used on a real car!
Thanks for the complements guys!
Well, M4tt83 and white97ex guessed it! The right rear quarter and the rear bumper were painted. I also painted the plastic molding that goes along the middle of the door on each side. What made you guys guess those parts? What gave it away? |

Re: Modeling techniques used on a real car!
Yea, I use my modeling techniques on my 1;1 car to. Infact, I prepped/primered my ENTIRE car using techniques I learned through models. I used Dupli-Color filler primer, and, as people say, prepping is everything. Well, if you click my link, the paint job looks almost professional. (BTW, it was done on my T-Bird..)
And, it looks like I'll have to do some body work on my Camaro. The ice over the winter cracked the fiberglass in the corner...
