smokin out the neighbourhood

I have a 1990 pontiac grand prix 3.1 ..When i try to start it i get billows of light blue smoke. My oil is full and so is my coolant. There is no coolant in my oil or the other way around and the engine is clean and dry. can anyone give me any ideas as to what the problem could be. Thank you in advance..

Have the cylinders pressure checked. Sounds like the piston ring seals are either poorly seated; or worn. This allows oil to leak into the cylinders while the car is off. Starting the car burns any oil that has leaked into the cylinder(s). The ol should burn away and the car should run normally. Check for smoke after starting away from a few minutes idling. Sometimes a determined hi-way drive will burn away any carbon that could have built up in the cylinders; but be careful; this can also worsen the problem if you ignore warning signs.

I have checked the spark plugs and they are dry...if oil was leaking into the cylinders wouldnt there be oil on them?

No; but the electrodes should exhibit signs of having burned the mix. The puff of smoke you see is that mix being burned and exhausted. Google something about spark plug deposits and check your cars plugs against the specs to see the diffs between normal ops, and abnormal ops. This would be a good chance to clean, regap, and preen the plugs too.(one at a time...heh..heh)
