Knocking problem

hey got a question. I got a 1995 Z24 Cavalier with a 2.4L Quad 4 engine, A/T. I bought the car from my friend for $500. Car has exhaust system done, 16inch american racing wheels and cold air intake. (Pretty good deal i think lol) But it has a bad knocking problem. He said he was on the interstate and raced some civic down through it, said he had the gas all the way down and all a sudden the car just died lost all power. He said he pulled over and couldnt get it started, so called a tow truck they came and got it and towed it to there garage. They said the timing chain broke. So they put a new timing chain on it and new sparkplugs. Now when i go to start it up it knocks very loud. Dont know what the problem is, im kind of a noob on working on cars but my dad is real good, but hes to busy to look at it right now. Plz help!!

I bought a 93 cavalier from a friend and the engine did the same thing. It turned out to be the connection rods, so it needed a new engine. i was using it for the transmission, so it didnt really bother me. =)
