hello i just purchased my first ford crown vic. its a 93 p71. it has 99,000 miles on her. it was a fbi car. its in really good shape but i am getting a shutter at different times. i wnt to autozone and they ran a diagnostic test on it and came up with 632, it says transmission control switch should be cycled once between engine id and goose test! what does this mean and how to i fix it? what is an overdrive cancelswitch circuit. the 2nd question i have is should i have this tranny flushed or just change the fluid? and what fluid should i use? merconV or mercon III which i believe it calls for. ive seen a couple people on line say you should switch over to the mercon v but others say not till the 97 model and newer. i also am not sure if its the 4r70 trany or the aode because in 93 i believe that year they used both. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks guys!!

Your trans is definately an AODE, the 4R70W did not make it into the panthers (CV/GM/TC) until the 1995 model year.

ANYONE who says that you SHOULD NOT use Mercon V in your trans is a fool, you MUST use it, regardless of what the owner's guide and dipstick might say.

ENGINE ID

The engine ID in a running test is a series of pulses equal to one half the number of engine cylinders. A 4 cylinder engine ID is 2 pulses, a 6 cylinder ID is 3 pulses and an 8 cylinder ID is 4 pulses. A diesel ID is 5.

GOOSE CODE

A "GOOSE" code (also called a dynamic response test) is output during an engine running test. This is a single pulse to signal you to quickly move the throttle approximately 1/2 way down and release.

DTC 632 is possibly the result of the test being done incorrectly. When you do a KOER test, you need to do a Dynamic Response Check is used to verify operation of the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), Mass Air Flow (MAF), Manifold Absolute Pressure(MAP), and Knock Sensor (KS) during a brief wide open throttle condition. The famed "Goose test".

What I get out of this is that the test was done improperly.

Trans oil flush/change.
I've done this procedure on the 85 conti. Better than a simple change and you can do it your self.

Should tell you on the trans dip stick the type of fluid recommended.

hey thanks for all the info guys. i just got back from getting my tranny tuneup. they dropped the pan changed the filter and gasket then drained the torque converter. no more shutter as of yet. when i got there i had the tech take a ride so he could feel it, after wards i drove it about 10 miles with no shutter im super happy. best 59.99 i ever spent. then since it was up in the air i had him change the gear oil which was also 59.99 with the additive.
