Complicated exhaust question

Not sure if anyone here will be able to answer, but this place seems more knowledgable than any other VW forum on the net.

I have a 1998 2.0L mkIII Golf. I might pick up a mkIII VR6 exhaust (which has had the stock 'suitcase'/mid muffler/resonator) removed (cut out). So I'd need a pipe welded together with the exhaust for it to work.

I've heard of people using a midpipe from the mkIV TDI on their mkIV 1.8T and VR6 cars. The mkIV TDI midpipe is 2.25 in., so it fits 1.8T and VR6 exhausts, but not the mkIV 2.0in 2.0L exhaust ... however, I don't have an mkIV, but an mkIII ... can I assume the stock mKIII 2.0L exhaust is also 2.0in, and the stock mkIII VR6 exhaust is 2.25in.?

If so, maybe the TDI midpipe should fit the mkIII VR6 exhaust without modification - assuming the exhaust system did not change between the mkIII and mkIV generation - this I have no idea about, and seems to be the most important question.

Thanks in advance for any help!
