mustang GTR Pen & Ink.
Here is a rough one.
Really loose and scratchy. I colored quickly in photoshop. ![]() [IMG] [/IMG] [IMG] [/IMG]It is not so perfect but it was more fun to do. My noodled to death stuff makes drawing no fun. |

Re: mustang GTR Pen & Ink.
Looks great! Most would be see this as a "real" work, not only a quick sketch.
I like both versions. Unfortunately the roof/top ofwindshield seems incorrect regarding the grille and front bumper. Can you explain to me how to color a quick sketch in photoshop the way you did? (pm?) thanks a lot... |

Thanks knightvision you rock!
Bet there is alot of stuff wrong with this one. Esp. in the wheel area and the hood and front end ![]() I really don't know any secrets. Just use comic coloring techniques that have been around for a while. Scan the drawing as lineart (no greys - just solid black). Then cleanup all of the extra marks and smudges. Then go to mode : rgb. I use the mouse to trace what I drew using flat color on a layer above my lineart. I put that flat layer on multiply. This lets me see the lineart through my flat color layer. I use the wand on the flats layer to select what I want to color with the airbrush. I then use a really soft airbrush setting to draw the shadows and reflective light areas. To find a more detailed toot on coloring, try and google comic coloring tutorial. It is way easier than using paints or markers. Last edited by grantrl78; 04-23-2005 at 08:19 PM. |

Re: mustang GTR Pen & Ink.
Thanks I'll try that instantly. I'm going to use this method to see how the colors turn out before I'd ruin it with markers. Thanks a lot.
EDIT: Using the wand tool to select is a very smart idea. I just had a try on an ugly old one and it looks rather good. Ill try one tomorrow when the beer is gone... Last edited by knightvision; 04-23-2005 at 06:20 PM. |

awesome, i'm also working on a pen and ink of the same image of that mustang. I also have one in progress of just the front of the car.
I think this car has great lines for the pen and ink. and you did a great job coloring it.

Thanks Clear Hooter and knorwj!
Knorwj I want to see your progress on it ![]() I agree about the lines of the new stang. They are strong. Clear Hooter I like the grill too. Those big fans showed up with not much work. One day i will try and add some more airbrush detail to the final one. |

Re: mustang GTR Pen & Ink.
grant, i like the drawing. it is not a sketch. you are being modest and humble, perhaps a bit faux-innocent, and that is not really necessary. you are good.
you must face the fact that you draw the way you do. you cannot go along and say to things "well, this is just a sketch, so now i'm off the hook because --see, look, after all, it is only a sketch. so i'm not really doing the actual drawing. it is only a sketch. so i am safe." that is bullshit. i am concerned a bit with the roofline perspective, which i like. but, as said earlier, it does not match the perspective, or lack thereof, represented on the front of the car. create a consistent vanishing point system and stick to it with every region of the car. you can fake vanishing points, as to actually project the points to a horizon is often impractical. fix the roof to match the front fascia, or fix the front fascia to match the roof. and the car is floating. cars typically sit on the ground. where is the drop shadow? shadows are most often very dark. particulary as it should be on this drawing, as it is very high in contrast. yet your shadow on the ground is virtually non-existent. you will embolden the drawing with a stronger shadow and light source. ask yourself, where is the light coming from? be consistent. create a tone, a theme, and do it to every area. do not hold back on one area, then go all-out in another if you want to render the entire drawing with equal weight. some artists do areas partially finished to give it a sort of "look." but this is not what you were going for in this drawing. i can tell by how you took some care with it overall. rather, it is not a lost-and-found sort of exploratory sketch. it is not a gesture drawing. you have crossed over into tight. you draw well. |

Damn Bonze!
That is a great crit! You sound like my illustration teacher . Laying into me a little bit. I can't say that I don't deserve it though. I do self handicap alot! It mostly stems from my real lack of confidence. I wish that I was as sure about my skills as you. Listening to your advice will help me improve. ![]() Tankyou for the honest feedback. Re: mustang GTR Pen & Ink.
Being a photographer (as well as all the other junk I do to keep amused or further my arts) I look at this angle from more of a thru-the-lens view. I really don't have a problem with the roof line since your looking almost from the pavement. Ground shadows do.....bring the car back to earth.....Even if the cars in a "Whee!" your still going to see some shadow. If I were to change anything other than the shadow, it would be to indicate a light reflection on the front windshield. The cross-hatching for the interior bothers me a bit. The windshield highlite would do away with all but the indication of the rear passengers side of the car as viewed through the glass. Of course after you see it, it may not look worth a cr@p as it may draw your eye too much toward the center of the picture.

Re: Re: mustang GTR Pen & Ink.
Thanks clearhooter I tried some updates to this thing!
I think you are right about the hatching inside the car. I didn't think this one would get so many replies. Polished it up some . About 2 hours worth. Thanks for the encouragement. [IMG] [/IMG]

Re: mustang GTR Pen & Ink.
Yep! I especially like the highlite on the passenger's side windshield rather than dominate it takes the eye back to the pony on the grill and leads you around the car from there. The highlite down the side defines the crown of the sheet metal very well. Wouldn't you be able to see some of the passenger's rear wheel? The way the car's positioned it may blend into the front unless you could show some highlite on the road surface of the tire.

Re: mustang GTR Pen & Ink.
grant, the revised mustang gt-r is just great. you really "get it." and it is my pleasure to help you.
typically if i lay into someone, i will offer a way for them to pull out of it and recover --i will not leave them hanging. and, it seems, you have taken it to task: the drawing is really cool at this point; you've really punched out the reflections on the sheetmetal and glass, the paintjob is more vibrant. the drawing has a very pleasant and attractive style. electric work, man. i will watch for more from you
