efi/fuel problem?need help

i have a 1984 celica gt with a 22-re engine. i was driving the car and it started to shuder and shake and then died. the engine turns over but wont catch.now heres the weird part, if i left it alone for a couple days and then tried to start it it would run for a few seconds and then die. so i thought it was the fuel pump. i had it towed to my house and now that its here sometimes it will start and run fine (ran it for half an hour) and sometimes it wont start at all. any help would be really cool.

listen for the fuel pump when you turn the car on. ideally have someone else turn the car on while you have your ear or maybe a stethiscope (if you can get 1) by the tank. you checked for a spark?--but id bet its the fuel pump..pretty ez fix if its that
