Not all cylinders working

So I get out of class this last week and 2 other friends and I were going to go get some food to eat...and I started my car and it was ideling. ANd one of my friends says dude, I think one of your cylinders isn't working. So I questioned him on how he knew and he said he could tell by the sound of my idle. Is this true? How would I know if one of my cylinders wasn't working?

Yep, along with severe vibs in the steering wheel. When you try to accelerate there is no power and the car surges. Been there before. Damn GM coil packs... LMAO..
