help!!! automatic transmission problem ( i think )

i have an old E30 320i. and lately it wont shift into first gear till it reached 5000 revs appx and other times it simply wont engage with the gears. i have replaced the transmission filter and replaced the oil but to no effect. it always does change gears eventually and doesnt seem to be slipping. it seems to be a problem of actually engaging with the gears......... any advice would be much appreciated as i am a long way from a BMW dealer and local mechnics here in oman seem lost and need to be able to poing them in the right direction...cheers

Hello:
I have a similar problem with my 1990 325i. I have been told that it is the transmission governor. In the past, I have used an aftermarket additive/clearer called "MT-10", which you can buy on the web from Muscle-Tech products in Pennsylvania. Here's what you do: Drain out 10 ounces of fluid. I used a turkey baster from a supermarket and vinyl hose, which I bought at a hardware store.
1. Warm up you engine to operating. temperature
2. Use the turkey baster and vinyl hose to remove 10 ounces of tranny fluid from the filler pipe.
3. Add the MT-10 with a small funnel, which you can also get at a supermarket.
4. Let the car idle for 20 minutes with the MT-10 in the tranmission.
5. Drive the car for an hour.
I owned a lincoln with a sticking transmission and the Mt-10 freed it right up.
This is a cheap solution, and if it doesn't work, you have lost very little.
Bob

PS: No, I don't sell MT-10
