Best purchase?

My wife and I have decided that we need a 2nd car...our 1994 honda accord with 127k miles is running great, but we are going to be working different hours and will need the extra transportation.

Anyways, we want to ask all of you what the best approach is. Do we go for an older Honda or a newer one? We are thinking either an ACCORD, CIVIC, or CR-V.

I have seen older accords for 5k with 80k miles....was wondering if that might be pushing it. I have seen how well my honda has stayed together engine-wise, and even if there were engine problems it wouldn't be as much as getting a newer honda.

What would be a good year to get for the best value? I appreciate all of your input, thanks!!

Re: Best purchase?

i would get a civic because you just need extra transportation. civic i think have best gas mileage and are more easier to find parts for. my uncle has a 1991 civic with 275k miles and still running

I am not sure, but I would think that on average a used accord is more likely to have been treated better by the previous owner. I would get the accord. Do you have more than 5K to spend?

We do have more than 5k to spend if necessary. We are just trying to minimize our negative return on this purchase.

"minimize negative return" - you need to explain what you mean by this.

Re: Best purchase?

any of the honda's you are looking to purchase is a good choice...as long as the previous owner took care of the car and no serious accidents. as for choosing which one of the 3...that really depends on what your needs are. is it going to be strickly used for one of you to go to work? since your married, is more room gonna to be a factor if you have kids or already have kids, but cant drive? IMO...the way things are w/ gas prices...i would choose a civic.

Honestly speaking, any Honda would be a good choice cause their so reliable. Except for the V6 Accords due to their tranny problems. You can get a decend 5th gen Accord (94-97) for around $5K and be happy with it. A Civic would be fine but if you're over 6 feet tall, it can get a little tight. The Civic does have excellent gas mileage, but so does the Accord.
