Budget Racecar
Ok this is my situation, i need a cheap beginners track car so i can have a car that i can take to the lessons/practicing for my cams licence (racing licence) yet im low on revenue, ive been discussing this with people and it souded like a viable idea so hear me out :
Step one, a car, it has to be a small car and cheap, the result, tonnes of little old cars like 82 Mazda 323's and 86~ corolla (twincam), ones which i can aquire in roughly good shape (the motor / tranny, not everything else) for 500 or so bucks. Step two, weight loss, gut everything from the inside such as seats, panels, centre console, dash, air con, EVERYTHING. Most of the cars ive seen have been fited with extractors so i cut the exhaust off after them, ducting it out the side of the car befre the cat., removing evertything from the cat - back. Intake, i saw a great carburettor set up for 1.6- 2 litre holden gemeni featuring 4 carburettors on ebay for 50 bucks, so i was guessing id try to retro fit somthign liek that to the motor, also topped off with some intake stacks. ill need some custom fabricating for the intake to fit the carbs, , weill see Suspension, some generic sports suspension from pedders (which is cheap but good quality, 499 bucks) i spotted some neat 15 inch alloys from a holden gemeni racind sedan thatd be suitable, with some slicks in still good nick (but prolly needing replcing soon) 300 bucks. Homemade rollcage, we have the mig welder so we can get at it. Respray (from whatever faded cracking paint it is) to somthing generic like flat black, nothing special needed, its just a beginning racecar. Stage 3 - the better bits. Engine parts, new pistons/rings/rods to fit the bore job on the cylinders, head recondition (120bucks) with reground cam, or just a new fairly radical cam, fitted with the mandatory new lifters and prolyl better valve springs. port/polish job. tada, thats the majority of the job, apart from a few minors like bearings and clutches if needed. new ignition gear, or if i have the money upgraded ignition gear, eg electronic points. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Sorry for the long post but i just wanted to voice what i was planning for a discount first race car, please, comments and criticism, regards, Chris.

Re: Budget Racecar
if you have a carbed car i'd investigate how much it would cost to upgrade to fuel injection. It's more efficient, and gives more power and that's what you want. I don't know how much it would cost to upgrade but i'd check it out.

Re: Budget Racecar
get a DSM. Theres no better bet. You can get a used one for like 1,000 bucks. Its turboed and has AWD already. For about another 1,000-2,000 bucks it will run 12's-13's.

Re: Budget Racecar
this is for road racing. also, this guy lives in Australia, they didn't sell DSM's in australia. For road racing, carburetion is very good, it offers better throttle response and is alot easier to tune than cheap fuel injection systems. The only car that I'm familiar with here that you can get your hands on is an early VW Golf or GTI. They have every part you can imagine available for them and are quite simple and have very stiff chassis.
