Cooling Fan Will Not Run

Could anyone tell me what types of problems I would see with a faulty temp. sending unit. The cooling fan never comes on, the check coolant light is always on, coolant level seems fine. I have noticed that car responds sluggishly when shifting and also lacks power when driving at speed. The fan will come on if I disconnect the Temp sending unit. Not sure if the problems I am having are due to a faulty sensor or due to the car being a 93 escort with 176,000 miles.

Thanks

Sounds like a faulty ECT, see ti1070's thread and comments below on the same subject.
