Re: Alarm problem Drivers door 1996 Golf

There is a switch inside the door that is operated by the driver's door lock mechanism, it's common to fail. Unfortunately I don't think it is available seperately from the entire latch mechanism.

Lightbulb Volkswagon golf alarm system

We had major problems with that alarm and the door and it would lock everything so we could not start it. Here is my best advice if you don't have the money to be paying for the diagnostics etc.
The alarm system and a bunch of other wires leading to god knows what run through a sleeve into the driver side door. Remove that boot (in the hinge area of the door) and take a peek! Because of the constant opening and shutting of the door, these wires fray and break. My husband took the boot off and spliced a broken wire together and wrapped it in electrical tape. Walaa! That is what it was. Check it out! I know nothing about cars. He saved us a heck of alot of money. The worry is some of the other wires look a little worn. So far so good! Good luck everybody.

Re: Re: Alarm problem Drivers door 1996 Golf

My local dealer told me that my problem was due to using the valet key and not the fob, which was lost. I ordered a new fob, but I need to bring my car to the dealer to have it programmed. Unfortunately, the car is a brick, because of the door latch. Do you know if there is a way to bypass the alarm so that I can get into and start the car so I can avoid paying to have it towed? And do you think it's possible for me to replace this myself? (I'm not very mechanically inclined and I have little patience.)
