Looking For An Engine!!

Alright.. i just bought a 1966 chevelle ss 396. Im 15 years old, and my dad and I are going to restore it a lot. My dad thinks the 396 is too powerful so we're looking for a 350. If anyone has a 350 engine or knows a good place to get one.. please AIM me, email me, or respond to this. I am located right outside of fort worth texas.

Re: Looking For An Engine!!

I've heard that the 350 can have as much HP as the 396. The car is worth more with the 396 when it comes time to sell it, especially if its the original engine.

You Might Want To Try The Junkyard. Iv Known People To Find Some Descent Stuff There. If All Else Fails Put An Ad In The Paper. You Might Want To Consider Keeping The 396 Though In Case You Ever Decide To Sell. Im 15 To And The 350 In My Car Is Plenty Powerfull(even Tough I Do Everything I Can To Get A Little More!) Enjoy Your Car.

*EDIT* The thing I like the most about driving a 396 is that it has a crapload of torque on tap....

Re: Re: Looking For An Engine!!

Definitly keep the 396 in there... it's not a big difference from the 350, but it's way sweeter and worth more with it... Tell your dad if he wants to slow the car down for you to get a smaller carbeurator. like a 2barrel carb instead of a 4 barrel, that'll do the trick, and you won't have to spend all that time and money swapping the whole engine.

you can find alot of good short blocks from gm performance parts store for about a grand. in my opionion I would take the 396 out but hang on to it incase you ever decide to sell the car or put it back as like a show car as I am 21 years old and know what teenagers can do to a cars' engine. also the 396 might make a good rebuild project later on with you and your dad when you deicde you want to learn a little bit more about workin on cars but in the mean time put a 350 in as they are a bit easier to replace and easier to get replacement parts for then a 396

hope this info helps
enojoy your new chevelle!!!

Re: Looking For An Engine!!

I just purchased a 1972 GMC Sprint with a rebuilt 350 engine. I do not want a small block, so with that in mind, I am willing to either sell it to you or trade it to you. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected] Thank You

Go with the fat covers. There are a million ways to de-tune the 96.

Re: Looking For An Engine!!

Ask dad what he drove when he was fifteen. If you are responsible when you are behind the wheel of a car, it doesn't matter if its a Big Block car or VW bug. If your not, you will be trouble in anything with a motor and wheels. Keep the car as original as you can. The hole idea is to look cool when you drive a classic. You don't have to be a racecar driver just because it's a BBC. Respect what you have and will get a lot of enjoyment from it.
P.S Dad with five kids and 5 classics.
