asbestos

does anyone know if the insulation on the passenger side of the firewall of an early 70s chevy would have asbestos in it? i have a 73 cheyenne, the first year of the 73 to 87 body style and the fibers are straight and very small, although i cant remember at the top of my head what color they are. should i just play it safe and wear one of them cheapo dust filtering masks that you buy for pocket change at home depot or something? does anyone know what this stuff is made of (the insulation)

Re: asbestos

Shit, It probally does. I would wear a recpertator that filters more then a dusk mask. When we were working on the brakes of my friends old chevy fan that shit was full of asbestos.

Re: asbestos

Asbestos usually is a white to grayish fiber. I would say that theres a good chance that the insulation may contain asbestos. I would try not to disturb it if you think it's asbestos, otherwise you can contaminate the whole interior unless you use proper removal and disposal methods.

Re: asbestos

My '86 (which is non-asbestos) has insulation very similar to carpet padding. It is mostly yellowish grey and has lots of colors mixed in. If yours is white to grey like wheeler88 said, I'd have it removed profesionally. I don't think a standard resperator filters out asbestos.
