02 Yukon anti lock brakes engaging on dry roads at slow speeds

My ABS engages for no apparent reason. Doesn't happen consistently and there is no telling when it is going to happen. Anyone have any ideas or possibly dealt with the same problem? Thanks

Smile ABS engaging

Believe I have good news. My Yukon Xl was doing this. Took it in to mechanic who said it was probably a bit of rust on the ABS sensor. Took him no time to clean off. No problems since.

Same here.

To be more detailed, mine was not the 'end' of the sensor that reads the ABS ring, it was rust that built up on the hub housing under the 'footprint' of where the ABS sensor bolted to the hub housing.

If you are going to do it yourself, make sure nothing gets into the hub housing (the hole left when you remove the ABS sensor), otherwise you'll contaminate the system.

BTW...mine required removal of the brake rotor.

If you can do it yourself, it's an inexpensive fix for what some dealers will tell you is the need for a new hub assembly.

Have since taken mine to dealer and it was the same problem, corrosion on abs sensors. @ $150 to clean (all labor). The next day it was reported on CBS news that there is a Govt investigation into accidents caused by this problem. Probably a recall coming, save your reciepts.

Angry Re: Yulon anti lock brakes engaging on dry roads at slow speeds

This has been happening to me with my 99' Yukon for some time now. I talked to several dealers and searched online for awhile. Today I pulled my rotors off to get the ABS sensors out to clean them. The driver's side went fine. The passengers side broke in two as I was taking it out. GM doesn't sell the sensor seperately!!! You have to buy the whole hub unit! My dealer cost through GM was $360 for an entire hub assembly. Pep Boys will sell me one wholesale for $180! I have to spend $180 for a $35 sensor and keep the hub as a spare? I'm so mad at GM!!!!!! I wonder if they jacked the price when they realized they were going to have to replace thousands of these for free.

Re: Re: Yulon anti lock brakes engaging on dry roads at slow speeds

here is the recall notice. hope it helps

NHTSA Recall Campaign Number: 05V379000

Component: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK

Details: CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE UNWANTED ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) ACTIVATION. THIS CONDITION IS MORE LIKELY TO OCCUR IN ENVIRONMENTALLY CORROSIVE AREAS. THIS RECALL WILL BE LAUNCHED IN THE "SALT BELT" STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA ONLY.

Corrective Action: DEALERS ARE TO REMOVE THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR MOUNTING SURFACE ON THE BEARING, APPLY RUST INHIBITOR TO THE CLEANED SURFACE, GREASE THE MOUNTING SURFACE, REINSTALL THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR, AND CHECK THE PEAK-TO-PEAK OUTPUT VOLTAGE TO ENSURE THE WHEEL SPEED SIGNAL IS WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS. THE RECALL BEGAN SEPTEMBER 22, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 OR GMC AT 1-866-996-9463.

Re: Re: Re: Yulon anti lock brakes engaging on dry roads at slow speeds

Hey RVB,
Thanks for the shot, but I called the GM number at the bottom last week and they said my VIN wasn't recalled. Don't ask me why, I saw the same posting on Edmunds. The NHTSB does have a listing for 99' yukon ABS issue on their site, but GM couldn't find any recalls on my VIN. My build date is 02/98, but my VIN and title claim the truck to be a 99', theoretically it should be a 98'. The recall supposedly covers from 04/98-???, but GM said it was even later than that. That's the only reason I can find that it isn't covered.

Anyone want to buy a brand new wheel hub with no ABS sensor? Nice for a paperweight.

I took my wheel and rotor of last night and it looks like the sensor is hiding behind a 5" (from 9 to 12 o'clock) shield helt on by two bolts....and of course those are corroded in there. It looks as though I need to remove the hub to get at this sensor but from what I am reading and the dealer charging 150$ I am thinking that I don't. But I do not see how to get around it. Can somebody elaborate on this fix? Thanks

I acutally removed the sensor on the driver side this morning. You do need to remove the shield, I used a 9/16 deep dwell impact socket and breaker bar to break them loose. They are just that tight.

Good Luck

It would be good to start a new thread as this one is quite old.
