Engine cutting out (long)
I have a 92 K1500 with a 350 and it is having a major problem cutting out. I was driving it the other day and the tachometer started jumping all over the place and the engine started bucking and surging. I limped it home and checked it out, But I couldn't find anything wrong. The pickup coil, coil, cap , rotor, module, ECM , wires an plugs were all new last fall, Although that doesn't mean one of them isn't bad. I revved it up in my driveway and it would sputtere and stumble and then it gradually cleared up so I thought maybe it was water in the gas. I added some heat and drove it a few miles without any problems and added fresh gas. Let it sit for a day and drove it a few miles with no problems. I got in it this morning to go to work and made it about 8 miles before the tach was jumping and the engine started bucking and surging again. This time it would start surging and then just quit as if I turned off the key, But it would start right back up and idle fine. As I was limping it down the shoulder it would just quit and the more I drove it the worse it got until it would quit and start right back up and immediately quit again as if I turned the key off. After doing this a few times then it did not even want to start, I would have to crank and crank to get it to start. I would then put it in gear step on the gas and it would die. Start it back up and rev it up and hold it at about 3 grand to clean it out and it would just shut off. Finally with much spitting and sputtering I made it home at which point the truck would idle and rev just fine while in my driveway. I was intially convinced it was in the secondary ignition, But now I am beginning to wonder. The way I cranked and cranked it acted like it was out of gas. The fuel pump was replaced two years ago, But the pressure regulator is the original with 236,000 mile on it. Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Sorry the post is so long, But I figured the more in detail I describe the problem the better.
