97 escort probs

HI!

I'm a new member to this forum, but real glad to have joined! I have been restoring and taking care of my 97 ford escort LX for about one year now. I have done all the work on this thing ever since I bought it for 100 dollars! The girl I bought it from crashed it into a mailbox concreted about 2 feet in the ground going about 60 m.p.h! She said she was going to DRIVE IT to the junkyard; I seen it and bought it that day.

Anyways other than a broken window, bashed driver fender, and a cat hair infested interior it was perfect. All of these I have fixed and replaced, but I've run into some problems!

This has a OHC 2.0 with a manual transmission, and I cannot find out where the trans fill hole is at. I found the drain but no filler, also I cannot find out where the fuel filter is at either. Can you guys/girls help me please!

Go over to http://www.alldatadiy.com. For 25$ you can get the same info tons of independent mechanics have. You can click on the demo to see what you get.

Just so you know you can search all posts on this board and when I did I found this info it should help ya.(not my reply but of others)

"If you have a manual transmission you need to locate the speed sensor, speedometer gear, on the transmission. You can find this by following the speedometer cable. Disconnect the electrical connection to the sensor. Clean the area around the sensor and gently pry it out. Check the fluid level at the speed sensor. If it is low, place a funnel in the sensor hole and fill to the full level. Reinstall the cable.

remove the electrical connection, and get a slip joint pliers or normal pliers, and gently rock the sensor back and forth all directions to try to loosen it up and slowly work it out, its what I had to do. but my buddy had the same problem before and he broke his, I think he said you could get a replacement senor from ford for like 35 to 40 bucks, but I never checked on that."

Re: 97 escort probs

No prob, just thought since you quite a bit of work to do on it you might of wanted to check it out. I know if I hadn’t of looked at it before I changed the half shafts in mine I would have been in a world of trouble. Turns out you cant pull both at the same time or some splines or something in the tranny will collapse

Fuel filter is behind the motor on the firewall, next to the power brake booster (black round drum behind brake fluid reservoir). It's tricky to snake your arm in to reach the hose clips, especially the bottom one.
I raise the car and get to the bottom one from underneath. Use a long flat screwdriver to pull the clips.

be sure your new filter has replacement i have found the plastic clip either brake apart or you loose them.
