weird problem with warm start and wipers on a 90

My 90 Dakota has started doing the weirdest thing I've ever heard of. On a warm start, after less than a mile, the truck will start lurching almost as if it is in too high a gear (although it is a stick shift), the check engine light will go on and what makes it weird is that the wipers will come on too! When I stop, the engine idles normally (but the wipers will still come on). Any clue what is going on? I'd like to have a guess before I take it to a mechanic.
