Turbo Cams on NA Engine?!
Because I'm still in school, I'm on an extremely limited budget. I've setup some steps for upgrades... each step being $1500 or under. ...Except for the supercharger, and possible turbo feeding the SC. (SC can be found here for the 420A Eclipse... http://boosthead.com/product.php) For this reason, I'm holding off on the forced induction until I graduate (1 or 2 yrs), but I want to P&P the head, get valves, retainers, springs, and cams soon. The Crower Stage II turbo cams have a longer intake duration than the NA cams. How would this affect a NA or SCed engine? ...I'm guessing I might even benefit from it since I have a custom ram-air setup. What are your thoughts?! Thanks!
P.S. Check out my other threads for the benefits of a turbo fed supercharged system... It's a ton of work, but it's also got a ton of benefits at the strip. Besides, my roommate did it to his Dodge Shadow, so now its my turn! lol

Hmmmm
Guess nobody has anything to say... I'll probobly just get the turbo cams and hope nothing's too screwy. I'll eventually get a turbo, so it'll be beneficial then.

Re: Turbo Cams on NA Engine?!
a turbo would be a wiser investment for the 420a than a supercharger if you're lookin at making some power out of that n/a. if you just want a little bit of boost then go with the supercharger if you like that better but you can safely boost 10psi with a turbo on the 420a motor (it's actually quicker than the stock gst then)

Re: Turbo Cams on NA Engine?!
Yeah, I know that a turbo would be about half the price, but it can still make 400+ hp with forged internals (225 otherwise)... And if that's not enough, I can always feed the eaton roots SC with a turbo. Lots of custom work... but it's all fun. I also like the idea of a linear power curve and a better sounding exhaust (no turbo to muffle it).
I'm sure the SC would benefit from turbo cams since all those cams do is open the intake valves longer. Let me know what u think. Just to reiterate... I know getting an SC doesn't make much sense for making power, but it's unique for an Eclipse... so I like the idea! lol : :

Best Cams for Agressive Sound?
I'm currently upgrading the head and everything slightly related in my 420A equipped Eclipse. I already have a custom exhaust, and I'm looking to make the car sound even more aggressive after this round of upgrades.
What am I looking for in a cam to produce an aggressive sound? Longer intake? Longer Exhaust? Or both? What cams would you all suggest? Here's what I've been looking at: http://exileracing.com/catalog/produ...roducts_id=116 http://catalog.exileracing.com/produ...6e2b403b699dbd http://catalog.exileracing.com/produ...8beda4694dfcb7 http://catalog.exileracing.com/produ...7fbcda3451945e I've noticed the Crane cams are not car specific... just made for the 420A. The Crower Cams are. Any and all input will be appreciated! |

Re: Best Cams for Agressive Sound?
I think you are looking at it from the wrong perspective. You want a cam that does what the car needs... from what I know of cams, mild street to full race. Sound will be a side effect of that... I don't see anyone recommending a race cam because the desired sound is of a race car.

Re: Turbo Cams on NA Engine?!
What part of this car is worth spending thousands more turboing an N/A instead of saving up for a turbo car? You have two threads about cams... now there is one.

Re: Turbo Cams on NA Engine?!
Well... I would have preferred to have the first post deleted. It's true that maybe that last question didn't have as much to do with performance, but I wasn't sure where to put it. It was an honest question for my own knowledge, but now I doubt I'll get an answer...

Re: Turbo Cams on NA Engine?!
And as for saving up for a turbo car... I bought my RS for insurance reasons. I need a daily driver.
So maybe you can give me an answer since I doubt anybody else will check out this post now. lol Somebody told me that the sound is caused by an overlap in intake and exhuast durration... I said, "yeah, the sound of your engine getting Fed up!" Could that be true? Thanks |

Re: Turbo Cams on NA Engine?!
I have a new cam question, but apparently it needs to be in this post...
So it's this overlap in intake and exhaust that causes the rough idle as well (but more top end power). I'd like to get Crower Stage 3 cams, however I'm afraid of the long term effects on my RS. As long as I get titanium retainers, better springs, and P&P the head... what would these do over time? |

Re: Turbo Cams on NA Engine?!
i don't think you'll need to go as far as stage 3 cams. if you want to upgrade the head with titanium retainers, dual valve springs, new valve, and port and polish the head, then you might have a little bit more power from the 420a. i don't believe it will do anything to the motor long run term at all. just stick with the middle of the two (between stock and race) if your looking for a driveable car.

Re: Turbo Cams on NA Engine?!
I appreciate the response. I guess I'll take that rout. You're right about the Stage 3. I need this car to be driveable. Thanks
