TRUE 0-60 & 1/4 TIMES (1st +2nd gen SC +Turbo)

Hey dudes, Ive searched and found many "opinions" on how fast the 1st gen supercharged mr2 is, but I got many different answers that dont match one another. sooo.
* What is the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times for the 1st Gen SuperCharged Model??
* What are the times for the second gen Turbo MR2??

I got different answers for the 1st gen from 5.9s - 7.3s for the 0-60
and 5s-6.5s for the second gen turbo.

SO PLEASE CLARIFY THIS DILEMA FOR ME.. lol. Thanks dudes

Re: TRUE 0-60 & 1/4 TIMES (1st +2nd gen SC +Turbo)

Also, what are some basic (not VERY expencive) addons I can do for the 1st GEN SuperCharged model that would push it to 5 seconds ????

0-60 times are going to change, like any other engine oriented performance, by a lot of things: elevation, weather conditions, the tires used...

most basic and cheapest of all: lighten the car.

next easy thing... get light rims and sticky tires.

The zero to sixty times for the second gen US car fell between 5.9 to 6.2 with a top speed between 142-150. I have every Car and Driver since 1990. They get slower from 93-95 because of some extra weight from added features and options like T-tops. I cant remeber the times for the super charged but I believe I saw one get tested at 7.2 to sixty.

Re: TRUE 0-60 & 1/4 TIMES (1st +2nd gen SC +Turbo)

*how would i lighten a car like that. There isnt a lot of things i can take out of it to make it a lot lighter except for the spare tire. OR IS THERE?

* I need more opinions on the 1st gen Supercharged.

*With the weight lightened in the 1st AND 2nd gen, how many seconds would that take off?

*Where can I find light rims and sticky tires. How many pounds for one rim is it considered light?

*WHat are some other basic things besides lightening the car, that I can do to get the 1st AND 2nd gens closer to around 5 secs for 0-60 ?

Im really interested in these little cars, especially the 1st gen supercharged. They are so hard to find though. But If I find one somehwere, Im going to buy the MR2 and sell my Prelude and hopefully have leftover money for the MR2 Project. Im really fascinated by how much potential these little cars have.

Thanks DUdes

gut it. take out the carpet, interior, liners, make a custom dash out of fiberglass or aluminium, remove the spare tire... remove the bumpers and replace the covers... lots of ways. easiest way is to start with a 1985 NA. Car and Driver in 1985 said they weighed 2024 lbs

* I need more opinions on the 1st gen Supercharged.
in regards to what? they are great little cars...

*With the weight lightened in the 1st AND 2nd gen, how many seconds would that take off?
depends on how much weight you remove... there is probably a converter on the internet for power to weight for a 0-60 time... but again, you have other variables

*Where can I find light rims and sticky tires. How many pounds for one rim is it considered light?
www.tires.com www.tirerack.com ebay for rims... lots of places. light, well my dad's lotus has some 8 lb each rims... my mr2 race rims are 13 lbs each

[i]*WHat are some other basic things besides lightening the car, that I can do to get the 1st AND 2nd gens closer to around 5 secs for 0-60 ?[i]
first off, the MK1 came as N/A or SC, and the second gen came as N/A or Turbocharged. a mk2 turbo won't have much trouble getting to a 5 second 0-60, assuming the other systems in the car are capable.

[i]Im really fascinated by how much potential these little cars have.[i]

click the picture in my sig

i'm running a high 4 second/low 5 second 0-60 in my mk1 right now, but that is with around 260hp* and Falken Azenis Sports... on race tires it is noticably quicker, and on regular street tires traction is an issue.

*according to upgrade figures

Re: TRUE 0-60 & 1/4 TIMES (1st +2nd gen SC +Turbo)

hey thanks a lot. great help. ...few more..srry...

* I want it to be my daily driver so Im not too happy bout gutting everything, since ill have passengers. Is it possible to cut the metal frame(somehwere in the trunk or w/e) in some places to reduce the weight?

* I dont think I would want to do a swap b/c I probably wouldnt be able to do it myself with friends, and It would be too expensive to get it professionaly done.

*Is the 1st gen (87-89 right?) Supercharged faster than the 2nd gen Turbo(91-93 right?)

*Which of those would it be easier to get to 5 seconds with some non-MAJOR modifications

* Im still not sure of the 0-60 time for the MK1 S/C and MK2 Turbo.

Since youre wondering why I want it to get to 5 seconds, its b/c my frind has a 1998 camaro that he bought for 15000, and it was realy modified. SO I want to buy a relatively cheap car to be able to keep up with his car.

cutting the frame is a bad idea, altering a car's structural integrety is a not good.

no, the turbo is faster in a straight line

second gen turbo was the fastest mr2 from the factory

Re: TRUE 0-60 & 1/4 TIMES (1st +2nd gen SC +Turbo)

ok, thanks. I guess now im looking for a decent 2nd gen Turbo in the Connecticut area and buy it if the price is right.

Would it take a lot of money to make the 2nd gen turbo into a 5 second car? What are some common addons that people do to get it faster (other than intake and hot wires and spark plugs)

tune-up (oil/filter change, coolant flush, compression check)
cold air intake (or just a k&n drop-in for a cheaper a slightly smaller increase in power)
cat-back exhaust (rs-r makes a good unit)
boost gauge

with those mods you should gain about 20-30whp (stock whp of 145-155)...with the cat-back offering the majority of that power gain...a down-pipe, slightly larger turbo, ebc (electronic boost controller), and other increasingly more costly mods can be added to increase your performance into the 11 second 1/4mile range and easily break 5 seconds 0-60.

your friends 98 comaro shouldn't be much faster than a stock mr2 turbo...when new the mr2 turbo actually kept up with the current corvette and the ferarri f348 (or maybe 328...I'm not a huge fan of them anymore...)...with a few mods you should be able to beat him even if he has a v8.
