Error Code on 98'Grand Prix Radio

I have a 1998 Grand Prix with a stock Delco radio - CD Player with Equalizer. When I put a CD in (it can be any CD, not just homemade copies, but even store bought originals), I get an error code E 20. Does anyone know what this code means? It's not a dirty CD, and I don't think it's caused by the temperature or humidity in the car. Any suggestions? I'm trying to solve the problem before buying a new/used replacement. Thanks!!!

Radio works fine?

Big-L had a list of radio codes. Can't find it. All I can find and this isn't it. Is this;

As I said this has no "E" codes

Re: Error Code on 98'Grand Prix Radio

This came from a site that i found when i searched "E20 error code on CD player" on google.com

E20: Focus Error

Cause(s): The CD player cannot focus on the disc or there is an internal focus problem.

Correction(s): Try cleaning the disc or using a new disc. Make sure the disc is loaded correctly. The road could be too rough or there is too much humidity. If the problem is not corrected, service the unit at an ACDelco(R) Service Center.

Since you said that it works on new, store bought cd's i don't think its the dirty disk problem, it sounds more like an internal focus means that the laser is out of alignment (you can realign it but you have to take the radio apart), or that the laser is dirty. In the later case you could get a cd laser cleaner for about $12. it's a disk that has a bunch of small brushes on it, you just put it in the cd player and let it run it's course. Some cd cleaners have solution, some don't. I don't think any one is better than the other.

Try the cleaner first, it's cheaper and quicker.

Hope this helps, good luck!

I had the same problem and I thought it meant the cd player needed to be cleaned w/ one of those cd player cleaning kit cd's. I ended up selling my car w/out fixing it. I installed a cd changer for 50.00 and hooked it up to the factory radio since i wanted one anyways. I didn't try the cleaner cuz i got the changer.

To say the least it is off topic. Well, you will need to learn how to post new threads because many old posts should not be resurrected. Plus this thread is over 1 year old. When you first go into the Pontiac Grand Prix subforum there is a pushbutton/icon that says "New Thread" located at the top left. Press and that and the rest is self explanatory.

This thread will probably be closed so you may as well give it a try and make a new post of your problem.

I see you figured it out in this post:
