climate control lights come on intermitently

2001 Golf 2.0 5 spd-
When I first got the car I noticed that the climate control area of the dash (right above the shifter) lights didnt work when I turned the lights on (except for the a/c and the recirc buttons, which work during the day when you push them anyways.) Recently I saw the lights were on then when I turned one of the knobs the lights went back out and I cant get them to turn back on. Any ideas?

It is very common for the bulb behind the fan knob to burn out, the filament may have made contact for just a moment when it worked.
