'88 98 sputtering, backfiring and cutting off. ICM?

As the subject says, my '88 98 regency, while going down the road or driving around town, just anytime randomly, it sputters and or backfires and soemtimes just cuts off. Press on the gass more and it just stalls. At first it was just sputtering and backfiring and of course underpower. Felt like it was missing constantly. It would have to be cut off and restarted many times before it would run normal. When it did run normal, it was perfect. I was thinking that it was possibly some trash or something in the gas tank clogging the pre-filter for the pump. fuell filter was just changed recently. Then the other day it began cutting off with no warning. Sometimes it was accompanied by a bit of sputtering but mostly it would just cut off randomly.

Then the other day it cut off pulling into a parking spot. It restarted fine but would cut off at idle speed. Rev it up a bit and it would run great but let it go back down to idle slowly, it would cut off.

So now I am thinking that it may be the ignition control module going bad. I have replaced it before but that time it was just fried and would not start at all no matter what I did to it and it came without warning. Seems odd that this time it would be intermitent.

Who knows....
3800 v6
Thanks all.

Nick

**EDIT... Checked the crank position sensor and it looks fine. No pieces missing, no wire covers missing.
I read through all the other threads and they suggested the position sensor and a some teeth missing from the timing chain.

I have thought about the timing chain before because sometimes when I go to start the car, it will slowly turn over 2-3 times like the battery is almost dead then fire right up. It does this sometimes even thoguh the battery is NOT dead or even close.
