is my 7m worth it?

greetings, i own an 89 Mk3 Supra. its a turbo model and im not sure what to do with it.. i got it before Xmas and i really liked the car excpet it always did weird things. like during start up it would take a while and it would run really really rough unless i gave it a little bit of gas for half a minute or so. it stalled on me once too (mind yourself this is an automatic), if i gave it a certain amount of throtle the RPM's would drop and it would come close to dieing but only died once. sometimes when id start it it would run and quickly die unless i got on the gas quick. also keep in mind its stock and its got just over 120K on it. it started overheating badly. as in id start up, pull out of the driveway and go around the block and by the time id get around the corner the water temp would go up and up. then coolent would splash over the hood and id have to shut it off and wait then start up and get it back in the driveway. i replaced the thermostat and bled the radiator and still ahd the same problem but not as often.. sometimes it would be fine and other times it would over heat. id shut it off and makesure not to let it get hot and i stoped driving it when all this started happening. i started it last week and it was fine so i drove it and it didn't over heat once. i get back home and my friend wanted to take it for a spin and it seemed fine so i let him. he started it and it was running rough although it was already warm, he pulled away normally and got about fifteen feet and there was a huge cloud of smoke and when i say huge i mean it put muscle car burn-outs to shame, it smelled like coolent and oil. so i leave it in the street and get it flat bedded to the mechanics. he replaced the fan clutch and drove it for about a hundred miles. he said it still felt wrong so he tore the ehad off and sent it to a machine shop. so in two weeks ill get it back hopefully if he puts it together and all is well. im jsut trying to decide wether or not tis worth keeping this car. i don't want anything else to go wrong. and if i can't make it around the block in this thing then i don't suppose i can drive on up to the drag strip and race it. so let me know what you guys think , if its worth keeping or if i should sell it and get something else. if theres any other problem you might sugest fixing please go right ahead, one friend suggested the turbo (origional ct-26) might be bad. the mechanic says its definately not the head gasket however he seems to think the cylinder head needs to be re-done. thanks for reading any input would be Appreciated!

if it smelled like coolant and oil thats sounds like a head gasket to me but i dunno plus the 88's arent known for having a very strong head gasket but ne way have you done general matnence on the car oil changes and such or wat if it runs that rough and wont idle correctly i suggest you take it to a toyota dealership and let them take a look it will cost a lil bit more but it would be worth it

i have an 88 n/a and while i'm not smelling oil mine does similiar overheating. my head gasket seems fine no oil-coolant mixing and had it checked by mechanic and told gasket is fine. he said that my oil pressure was low so i added some engine restore to oil and pressure is higher now.if you figure it out please post remedy. thank you

While not even close to the same car, my old cavalier did the same exact thing and it took about the same amount of time to overheat...it turned out it was the water pump I believe.

i'd replace the head gasket anyway but thats just to be safe it could also be your fuel filter and your water pump

Re: is my 7m worth it?

the question is how well do you like you supra? they are great cars once you get the head gasket done. the problem with the mkiii turbo is not the head gasket, its the head bolts. toyota put a low quality bolt in the heads. if you love your car then mechspend the money and buy some ARP head studs. otherwise your going to put the same weak bolts back into your car and have the same problem in a couple of years. ill say one thing your mechanic was right there was not anything wrong with your hg its your bolts.
