92 Golf trying to convert to a Gti

I chose to buy a 92 golf in excellent condition for cheap instead of buying a pounded on Gti. I would like to know what the major difference s are from the GL to Gti. Suspension, cams, disc brakes? Is the transmission different? What would be a plan of attack for getting more power without a total rebuild? Also, if I fund a 16V engine and tranny, will they drop right in without a whole lotta mods?
