DIC and Steering Wheel Controls

I just purchased a 02 TB and I am would like to add the DIC and steering wheel controls. Has anyone ever attempted this or even researched it to find out what would be involved? I appreciate any help anyone could provide.

Re: DIC and Steering Wheel Controls

I added both to my 2004 EXT. Here's the skinny:

You need:

Steering wheel w/controls
DIC
Compatible airbag clockspring
Reprogramming of BCM/Cluster from dealer

You also will need to run wires from the steering column connector to tha appropriate modules. For instance, you need to run four wires up to the cluster connector, a ground wire, an interior lighting wire (backlight on buttons), a wire to +5v reference (radio controls), and a signal wire for the radio controls back to the BCM.

It took me maybe 4-5 hours of tearing apart the interior, referencing the manual, and pulling wire and adding the correct connectors. Not too bad, but still pretty involved. I'm pretty particular about running wires down the harnesses where they are supposed to go, rather than anywhere.

If you have any questions...drop me a line.

I have narrowed the clockspring down to part #26090357, is that correct ikurek? I also found a steering wheel for $50. Does GM make the wiring harness, or is running your own wires necessary? I still need to find a dealer for the tech 2 flash. Someone told me that the cluster is the same but the window does not seem large enough for a DIC, it appears only half the size.

Not sure on the part number....but there are only two available. The one with the steering wheel controls, and the one without. Any GM dealer should know which one you need...

Yes, GM makes a harness, but to get the wiring you need, you will need to buy a complete dash and interior harness. MAJOR $$$$. For some reason, GM actually only builds the harnesses with the wiring for the options the truck has. They used to build them with the same (full) harness, but I guess this saves money for them. It isn't that hard to run your own wores, just takes time and the right connectors. If you ever did it before, this is NOT a job you should just jump into. It is not plug and play.

Whoever told you the cluster is the same is full of crap. They are different. Beleive me, I have both and not only do they have different displays, they also have different internals to drive it.

Good luck!
