What weight of oil should I use for my 96 Jetta? 2.0 4cyl. 129,000 miles

I would use 10W-40 in Winter & 20W-50 in Summer.

It's got Mobil1 10W-30 in it right now says the last owner.

10W-30 would be accepable in winter (VW allows down to 5W-30 if the temp stays below 14F). Above 50F they reccomend 20W-50.

I still don't understand why the oil has to be so thick for this particular engine. The thicker it is, the worse gas mileage.

Newer engines that run 5W oils are machined to tighter tolerances & have to have the lighter oils. The '96 2.0 isn't one of them.
