I've got a 94 GCL, it's got around 120k on it. Lately the engine's been making some rumbling sounds. One happens when I'm around 30-40mph, and then it goes away once I'm in the 50's +, the other happens when you take your foot off the gas while your driving. The best way I can describe it is like this. When you drive a manual shift and give the car gas and then take your foot off, you hear the motor start to wind down slowly, but on an automatic, you would not normally hear that, you take your foot off the gas and the motor should be pretty quiet,,,, well my automatic sounds like a manual shift when I'm driving and take my foot off the gas...... I haven't had anybody look at it yet, cause I don't like to put too much money into this truck. I'm just looking for some direction as to whether it could be a transmission problem? exhaust problem? any ideas would be very helpful.

Re: 94 gcl engine problems????
In my '94 Jeep GC I had engine noises and trouble shifting. I though I needed a tune-up, but then the transmission problems became more obvious (such as trouble shifting from 2 to 3, then from 3 to 4 unless I accellerate & decellerate). I took it to a reputable transmission place and they confirmed it was a bad tranny (not a total surprise after 169K mi). After the tranny was rebuilt, the engine worked fine.
If you're cautious of spending money, I'd recommend getting referrals to a few specialists (transmission, engine, etc.). If they say it will cost a bunch to fix, see if the next place makes the same recommendation. Most places will test drive it for free. Let us know how it goes! |
