96 Maxima vs. 89 Camaro 350 IROC-Z

People under esimate the Maxima too much. I was leaving a pool hall with a friend. I met 2 of his friends that were there and one of them owned an 89 350 Camaro IROC-Z with an exhaust. When we were leaving my friend shouted out to him I bet this Maxima will smoke that IROC. The kid laughed and taunted my car of course saying it was a little POS rice burner and wouldn't beat his car in a million years. I have a 96 Maxima 5-speed with an intake and iridium plugs. Everything else is stock on the engine. So we pulled out onto a 2 lane road and pulled up to the light. I know IROC-Zs are rated at 245 HP with somewhere around 300 ft-lbs of tourqe and does a 0-60 time in 6.8 seconds. His car had 94,000 miles on it. I thought it was going to be a close race. When the light turned green he had a slight head start because he got on the gas first. I got right up next to him then banged it into second. Started pulling ahead of him and then banged it into third. After I hit third, the race was pretty much over. I slowly pulled ahead of him more and more. When I was in fourth, I was about 1-2 car lengths in front of him and that's when he let off. I turned the hazards on and laughed. He pulled up next to me and was shocked with nothing to say. I just laughed and stuck it back to him. I have to admit I didn't think I was gonna take that race. The funny part is my car has 185,000 MILES ON THE ORIGINAL ENGINE!!!!!!. Runs mint too. Maybe the synthetic has something to do with it. I love my car and will probably have it until i'm dead. It's really reliable and pretty damn fast. People need to think twice before taunting the Maxima. One thing I learned about it when I first got it is it's much faster than it looks.

Nice win. Was his car an automatic?

reason i ask is because i drove a friends '85 automatic z28 and thought it was pretty slow (when left in D ) for making such a racket with its straight pipes and all the mods on it.

Manually 'shifting' the auto was another story.... what i'm trying to get at is the auto tranny on that car was a POS.

lol back in the day in 88 when i drove my buddy's iroc auto, that beast screamed and handled like a dream no maxima could touch that thing.. the iroc in question might be mighty tired. afterall, it is 17 years old.

The IROC was an automatic. The 350's didn't come with stick because the borg warner world class 5-speed couldn't handle the hp. So they just stuck a 700r4 automatic in it.

Or until you kill someone or yourself.

Take it to a track once, run the 1/4 mile. Get the print out and put it in your glove box. Next time someone wants to challenge you and your not close to a track, show them your numbers.

Drive safely.

Do you drive 5 speed or an automatic? Either way, nice muscle kill.

i know this is abit old but i cant help responding to this one

89 iroc-z's were rated at 230hp or 245hp, depending on if they got the performance dual cat exhaust system. and rated at 330 to 350lbft of torque. with exhaust, your looking at 250hp/350tq

bone stock 350 TPI iroc's went mid 14's at 96-98mph. 0-60 is more like low 6's. i know tons of stockers running mid 14's. mine with exhaust/headers/2800stall converter is doing 13.8's at 97 with the crappy 2.77 gears.

and they weight more like 3300-3500lbs, they arent that heavy

autos arent junk. 700r4 gear ratios arent bad, but have a really deep 3.06 first gear to move the car off the line extremely well , even with highway 2.77gears....... add a shift kit and higher stall converter and its quicker than a manual

this kid you raced Obviously had a problem or had the 305 auto. even a tired L98 is a mid lower 15 second car... and i doubt a maxima can do mid 15's. I never had any problems with any stock civics, G35 sedans, mild modded civics/del sols/preludes, and even a stock Stealth Twin turbo. those cars i mentioned were ranging from high 13's to low 16's and that covers a maxima.

check his VIN number, see if the 8th digit in the vin code is a 8. that means it has a 350.

Re: 96 Maxima vs. 89 Camaro 350 IROC-Z

A 1990 Iroc Z with the 350 will do 0-60 in 5.8 sec 1/4 mile in 14.4. Even the 2010 Maxima cannot do that. I personally own one and have no problems beating G35's ,350z, or Infinity G37's. The Iroc will have no problem with any NEW v6 powered car for that matter.LOL. The Iroc you raced was probably a 305.. and may have needed work. Trust me, i have owned a Nissan Turbo Z. Sure they are quick, but it will absolutely NOT keep up with my iroc, not even off the line.

1990 Camaro Iroc Z 0-60=5.8 sec

1995 Nissan Maxima SE (manual) 6.6 15.2

2010 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SE 0-60=5.9
