Drivetrain Strength

I'm fixing up a 66 Malibu that has a saginaw 4 speed, 283,and a 10 bolt with 3.08 gears. I would like to get a motor with around 500hp. I'd like to get 4.56 or 4.11 gears. My dad used to flat shift the saginaw and 10 bolt and it never had any problems. Is it harder to break the rear with lower gears, the tires should spin easier...? Will they be strong enough? A book I have "Chevy Performance" has a guys Nova with a 350, about 600hp, and a 10 bolt with 4.88 gears that runs low 10s. It has a picture of him doing a wheelie leaving the starting line. It also says that if you get elongated studs for your main caps a 2 bolt main can hold 600 hp without any problems. But i'll more than likely get a 4 bolt block anyway...

Thanks
Josh

Re: Drivetrain Strength

Well, you asked general questions and answered them yourself.

Re: Drivetrain Strength

Your 10 bolt will be fine. You can buy better axels, replace all the bearings and seals, install an alumium cover, posi.

http://store.summitracing.com good place to start.
