Need Help...please!!!

All right, I had a bad "tick" noise...lifter I guess. I did the Sea Foam thing and the ATF thing and the noise went away almost completely. Now, I went to Jiffy Lube to change the oil and they put in 10W-30 Pennzoil synthetic blended oil. The truck ran great for about 10 minutes and then all of a sudden bang "TICK" came back loud as ever. I am at a loss don't know what to do. Could it be the oil? Maybe I should switch to conventional. PLEASE HELP.

Thanks

I don't know. It could be, do you think this is the problem. If it is I'll get rid of the 10W-30 and put in 5W-30. How about 20W-50 I think this is pretty thicker than 10W-30.
Should I use Sea Foam again or the ATF?

Thanks

Re: Need Help...please!!!

Check the oil level. These places are notorious for underfilling. Good luck.

Thanks, I checked it out already and it looks fine. What if I put in a quart of thicker oil like 20W-50? Think that may help

I personally would not run anything other than 0w-30, 5w-30 or 10w-30 in your 1996 (3.2L I presume). No 40 or 50wts. The orifices in the hydraulic lash adjusters are very small & thick oils will only make a top end tick worse.

Seafoam is a good product & adding it to your engine oil should help clean out clogged lifters. In some cases, adding ATF can help as well by thinning out the engine oil. ATF's of today are not much more than a 20wt oil, a small add pack (often manufacturer specific) & red dye. ATF's of years ago actually contained whale oil which was an EXCELLENT cleaning agent. That was about 30yrs ago. Old habits hang around for a loooong time.

Thanks Joel,

I'll try the ATF and see what happens. Keep you guys posted.

Any other advise from anybody else with similar situations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Luis

Don't use Penzoil. Worst oil you can use other than recycled oil. I use Napa oil which is Valvoline in a Napa bottle. Another excellent oil is Kendall, but its hard to find in some areas.

Don't go to places like Jiffy Lube. Take it to the dealer, or do yourself.

OK now what do I do.....I tried the ATF and absolutely nothing. I still ticks something ferocious. Never did it sound like that before the oil change. Should I go back to conventional see if that helps, or does it really matter if its synthetic or conventional??? My wife is going nuts with the ticking!!!!

Are you saying you've always used conventional and just recently switched to synthetic? And this is when the ticking started??

If so, go back to conventional oil. If you have more then 100K miles, I would not recommend switching to synthetic at that point.

I use nothing but straight Dino (conventional) Havoline 10W-30 in my 97 V6 Rodeo - never have had a single tick in over 137K miles.

If it works, don't fix it!

Just my .02cents

My oil of choice is Castrol 10w-30. Always worked great in my subarus, now using it in my 2000 passport. In my subaru, i would change the oil every 9000 miles, which was 3 months of highway driving, and added a quart of lucas at the oil change, and the oil came out smoothe and shiny, not gritty. i am changing my oil in the passport at 3-4000 mile increments using the lucas and castrol as mentioned, and getting the same smoothe and shiny when drained. Never any noises. 45000 miles on the passport. My 2 cents
