99 civic speedo intermitant/stuck ??????

Hello all
My speedometer only goes to 20mph somtimes. Somtimes it works, anyone seen this before? is there a cable or is it an electrical issue. any direction of help would be apreciated.

Hey

Funny how you have this problem... I have the exact same one on my '98 ex sedan... my dad and I ripped out the dash and checked the speedo and found out after a day of voltmeter usage that it was just a bad speedometer head, so we got a new one. And, mine would hit 20 and then stop also, so I'm assuming that yours has the same problem as mine. Good luck.

Not sur if mine is the same problem? SOmetimes it doesn't work other times it kind of bounces up to 30 mph and flickers back and forth to zero. By bad speedo head do you mean the entire instrument cluster. Did you replace it yourself?

The speedometer is actually the little device inside the gauge cluster that tells how fast you're going... you don't need to replace the entire cluster, just the little part... ask a dealer or a junkyard and they'll find one for you. And yes, I replaced it myself... wasn't too hard.
