My 99 with 107k had a ticking noise around, 10k ago. I did ARX at 106K but after 250 miles started getting oil light so I changed oil and filter and no more oil light problem. Ticking noise was gone as well. Tonight I changed the oil and filter to get rid of rinse oil . The oil had about 275 miles on it and was definately dirty. Ticking noise no-longer present. Here is my problem. Went for a short ride and I guess I knocked trans into tip mode and did not realize it until around 6000 RPM. I got an oil light and now I have a clicking that really doesn't sound like the original clicking but it kinda does and is coming from the back of the valve cover. I got back home and let it sit for a while, then went for a short drive again. The clicking kinda speeds up with engine but it also gets louder in a way. No oil light until after about 5 minutes of driving around the neighborhood. Timing belt was changed at 105k along with front cam seals, water pump, belts, hoses and some other items. It was running fine until excessive RPMs. Any ideas?

How do you detect cam chain tensioner problem vice valve noise. Will the computer output a code for either? I am taking car to VW in the morning and I am curious how the tech should diagnose the sound I am getting. I am concerned from past experience the car will sit in the parking lot most of the day and I will get a call that something needs to be replaced after I receive a $79 diag charge and all the tech does is turn the car on and off. Should an oil pressure check be standard since I have had an oil light on twice? I do not have to add oil and the car shows no sign of buring oil. Actually, with the exception of the sound, the car runs very smooth.

Re: cam chain noise or valve noise?
1.8T's are known for oil sludging issues & cam chain tensioner problems.
