It all really depends. Head material will be critical, aluminum allows you to go high on compression due to it dissipating heat much better than cast iron. It also depends on your combustion chamber efficiency, if there are any hot spots etc. I have run 10:1 with cast iron heads, and using the good gas, so my experiences have been good, but I don't want to tell you that all people who have tried this have been successful. There is always a chance that your particular engine combination wouldn't like it. If you run aluminum heads, you are ok, and I feel confident in saying that you have about a 99% chance of that working.

It would be a help if you would list off the other components you are thinking about using on this engine, cam, type of pistons (forged or cast), heads, you know, all the good stuff.

Generally, flat top pistons are less likely to produce detonation than domed or pop-up pistons.

Hemispherical combustion chambers, like those found in most OHC engines detonate less than a wedge shaped combustion chamber, (like in most older domestic v8's)

I think you'd be good to go with that one! I doubt that there would be any problem with 91 or 92 octane and that motor. Just watch advancing your timing too much. I'd guess 34 or 36 degrees of mechanical advance completely in by 2500 or 3000 rpm would probably be good. I also have a GMPP crate motor and it's been excellent.
