Which Transfer case for a swap
I have a 1994 GC Ltd. 5.2 MPI QuadraTrac which has started showing signs of a bad VC. I will have to replace it or swap tranfer cases in the near future. I would like to know what are my options. I drive on the highway 10 months of the year and drive off road the other two months. I drive 35 miles round trip to work( 47 weeks a year ) and appox. 100 miles a day hunting( 5 weeks a year ).
This is my first 4 wheel drive machine, my first Jeep and I love it!! I will keep this one until the tires fall off. What are my options??

Re: Which Transfer case for a swap
What kinda of options are you looking for.
if just a transfer case swap, go with a NP242 (Sele-Trac), it gives you 2HI, 4HI (Full Time), 4HI (Part Time, NEUTRAL, 4LO. 2 hi when not needing 4WD - better gas milage and a bit more power. 4HI (Part Time) - locks both axles together for better traction when wheelin'. 4HI (Full Time) good for winter use, you can leave it in 4 HI (Full Time) all year around if you like. |

I have the 94 jgc with the quadratrac, but with the 4.0 litre. I have the same situation with the vc going bad, I know that the np242 is a 2wd and 4wd alternative, but have heard that with bigger tires the 231 is the best transfer case to go with as it is a little stronger, any one know of this? , I hope its true as I drove 5 hrs out of state to pick up a jeep junker [rolled], with the 231.

I will be looking for a 242 transfer case. It looks like the best fit for my needs. I hope I can find one that will be a direct swap. I always hope for luck and plan for trouble.

Jeep HoriJeep Horizons ZJ NV242 Transfer Case Szons ZJ NV242 Transfer Case Swap. This is a good Tech Link for any one who wants to go to a 242 or 231 Transfer Case.

I have never heard of the 231 being stronger then the 242 or that it works better with bigger tires. But if you don't live up north where there is aot of snow then the 231 would be a good choice. I live in pennsylvania and the 242 would be the optimum choice for me because of the 4HI (Full Time), I could leave it in 4HI all winter long and not have to worry about anything. |

Re: Which Transfer case for a swap
I do live up north, Michigan, are you sure that the 242 differs from the 231 in 4hi capability? if there is no vc, then how can you have "full time" 4wd without the power distribution?

i have the same problem as kensue49. i have to take the front drive shaft off in the warmer seasons for it to not make noises. how do you identify a trnsfercase model in a junkyard? is there the number somewhere on it so you can see before having buying it?

Re: Which Transfer case for a swap
I am not quite sure how the 4HI (Full Time) works, but I think it has a gerotor pump (don't quote me) just like the new Quadra-Trac II transfer cases. the 231 only has 2HI, 4HI (part time), Neutral, and 4LO..
TEEMSTA - there is a round tag on the housing of the transfer case that will tell you which Model it is (NP/NV231, NP/NV242, NP/NV249). the NP/NV depends on which transfer case, NP: New Process changed their name to NV: New Venture in 95 or 96. but the transfer cases are the same just different name. Or you can look on the bezel around the transfer case shifter, 231 = Command-Trac (2HI, 4HI, N, 4LO), 242 = Selec-Trac (2HI, 4HI Part Time, 4HI Full Time, N, 4LO).. |

I don't think it has a Gerotor pump either, I think it has a limited power distribution (no lock up), I think it might just supply 30% power to the front axle at all times. just like the VC in a 249: the VC locks up when wheel slip is detected. It has a fluid in it that hardens when the heat is built through friction of the two extremely different speeds of the front and rear axles- causes the VC to locks and give you that added traction. |

Re: Which Transfer case for a swap
Mines a 95 limited. Dropped the quadra and getting ready to install a 231 command. I'm mokifieing the neutral so it will have a TRUE neutral. Doesnt have from the factory. Also replacing the slip yoke output with fixed so if i bend or break the rear shaft I can remove it and drive on front without losing the tc fluid.

Re: Which Transfer case for a swap
Its still a work in progress. Novak conversions offers lots of parts for this and www. wheelsoffroad.com/howto/3103 is an article about this. If I locate a digital camera I'll get pictures.
