only for smart honda fans
i have a friend that has a d16y7/tranny/computer/axles/wirring harness(completeswap) and he will install this in my 4th gen civic(1990) for 1000. that is realy cheap to me because i need a new harness b/c mine is so hacked up i have shorts.
we came across a problem.. he doesnt think the d16y7 (sourced form a 98 civc) will fit in my civic(1990) because the motor mounts a very diffferent. i've heard these are bolt in motors but wtf?? here are my questions. #1 is there an inexpensive and easy way to make the d16y7 tranny fit? #2 my computer is from a d16(mpfi) will i need to reuse that ? or can i use the newer ob2? #3 if the answer is no b/c of the wiring what if a use a newer wiring harness? #4why arent the mounts tha same from the 98 civic as the 90 civic? #6 this is the most important question how can i retro fit the d16y7 mounts to fit in the civic? he hs some experince ex: installed greddy turbo on his car/installed gsr's into cars how ever i think im the first 4th gen hes worked on |

Mounts shouldnt be that different... Theyre both D series engines... I dont know about the later EK/EJs engines, but with the engines from an EG into an EF you simply swap the mount that bolts to the side of the engine under the timing cover from your stock engine onto the new engine... And why would u do this swap? Isnt the y7 a non VTEC with even less HP (106HP) than the A6 (108HP) (u said u had a D16 with MPFI so I assume the D16A6)? |

1.. if u use the Y7 tranny, u will need to convert to a hydrolic system as this is a hydro tranny and not cable. use an Si tranny from a 4th gen 2.. Yes u can use the d16 ecu as long as its an obd-0 ecu and its for the right tranny (auto or manual) 4... the mounts are different because they are different cars... the actual motor mount will be the same tho, and since ur using a 4th gen cable tranny then the mounts will work.

Re: only for smart honda fans
Yea, I didnt think of that, if this is the first EF hes worked on, he may not know u have to swap trannies to the cable tranny (for ease of install, the mounts are the came, and no real advantages fabricating a hydro tranny in there, atleast none worth it when u have an Si tranny in there already)...

Re: only for smart honda fans
ok, here;s what i had to do to make my d15 vtec fit which is very similar to your motor. I took the old motor mount off my original motor and mounted it to the new one, u have to trim the timing cover for it to fit right but it's not that big a deal. I would convert to obd1 to get all you can out of the motor but get the obd jumper harness and wiring is alot easier. The motor you have is actually a obd2 motor but it will work just like the obd1 motor as long as you use the odb1 ecu. If you stay obd0 then you'll have to wire up vtec, which all in all is three wires between 2 differ connectors. Do some searching ont he forums and you will find plenty of info on this swap, and just so you know, it'll pretty much be the same as a d15 vtec swap or d16z6 swap so you can get info from those swaps also.

Re: only for smart honda fans
i put a d15vtec in my car from japan, i did have the non vtec d15 in. the d15vtec, d16z6, and d16y8 and y7 are all basically the same as far as making it fit, you have to use your onld motor mounts, and when you use the 4 gen si tranny the mounts on it line up since it's the tranny for the car. And if you have a hf and i think there are a couple of models that have differ front knuckle slpine counts for the axels, so maybe make sure if you go w/ the si tranny you don't have to compensate for that suprise if it apply's cause it would suck to get it int here and then the axels didn't fit. But if you wanted you can have custom axels made instead of changing out the knuckle splines

Re: only for smart honda fans
ok to run obd1 and just so you know i havn't done the swap u are doing but i did mine so things might be different but i dont think it will be. For 5spd use a p28 ecu from a 92-95 civic si or ex, get the obd0 to obd1 jumper harness (you can find it on ebay) and wiring will be much easier. you'll need a stock 88-91 i think maybe 90, civic or crx mpfi engine harness. to convert that harness to obd1 the injector plugs, dizzy plugs, have to be changed out and a couple sensors are in differ places and a few wires have to be relocated but once you get into it it gets easy if you do the right research and get the right info. I jumper harness came w/ some wiring instructions that helped out a lot and plus i bought a book on honda engine swaps to help to but if you run into trouble then you can get help from the forum too. There are some other small things that have to be changed but they are very obvious when you are going thru the swap and fairly easy to figure out how to make it work. I had never done a honda swap before and did this one and it is running fine, but i did do a lot of home work.

Re: only for smart honda fans
search the forum and search yahoo and google for all the swaps i listed above and you should get plenty of info. One other thing you will need to get is a 4 wire o2 sensor too and your jumper harness should tell ya how to wire it up but once you start thru the searches you'll figure out which ones to look at and which ones to leave alone but most of the stuff you find is pretty good info just some things are worded differently but basically acomplish the same thing so it just depends pretty much where some one wants to start at. I started w/ the harness at the injectors and then went from there.
