head work
i'd like to bump my compression a bit on a stock motor. When I tear the heads off and go to the shop with them what should I ask for to be done. I not very familiar with how it all works and what to do and how much of it to do. how much milling does it take per pound of compression? I need to keep this at a low price (as most of us usually do) so I dont know how much of the other stuff I can do. Like port and polish and such. Thanks

What you are asking about is having the heads milled to reduce combustion chamber volume, but there's more to it than just that. You'd also need to get your intake manifold milled the same amount so it will seal properly (more $$). Look at it this way, going from a 64cc chamber to a 58cc will only raise compression by about 0.5:1, So, on say, an L98 you'd go from 9.3:1 to 9.8:1, not a big increase , nor in HP (about 10 max). Not exactly the best bang for your buck.

so for a stock 305 or stock 307 its probably not money well spent? the 307 is a chevy motor not an olds. I read that if you mill the heads on the 307 it can realy help. The 305 I don't have much hope for but if I keep it I might have them milled if its worth my time. Thanks for your help.

Were you going to use TPI on that 307 or a carb?
The 307 was a high reving engine like the 302, TPI's are NOT high reving engines, they run out of steam at 5k. The 305's have 58cc chambers already and 9.5:1 CR (TPI's). If you already have all of the other performance items, ie; cam, headers, alumnium heads, ported intake (plenum, runners & high flowing base) etc, and are looking to get those last few ponys..then it would be time to mill the heads. Until then, just stick to the major parts or go with more cubes. |
