Antifreeze smell

Hi I just purchased a 99 Beetle for my daughter as a first car 57,ooo mi 2.0 automatic. The car seems to run well but when I turn on the heat there is a strong smell of antifreeze from the vents, there are no puddles under the car or wet carpets could it be the heater core? Thanks DD.
