98 Passport engine alternatives...
A friends 98 Passport 3.2 blew a large hole in it's side. The used 98 3.2 market seems awfully pricey, is there an alternative? An earlier year? Anything to save her from a large bill? Thanks, Chris

Nope, the isuzu 3.2 is it.
You could swap in a (insert any brand motor) if you have the time and the money. You will then need the tranny, wireharness, computer and a bunch of other stuff. what happen the the engine? Did it run low on oil?

Dont know, I only got the story. She said that her oil light came on and it died, somewhere it tossed a rod.
So no other, perhaps earlier year will work? I'm pricing used 98 motors at $2200 and 96's at $900.... be nice to save the grand. |

Re: 98 Passport engine alternatives...
nope motor mounts and wireharness are complete different.
If she saw the oil light, that usually means the death of the engine. The oil light doesn't measure the amount of oil, it measures oil pressure. so once it gets to a point where there is basically no oil in the system the pump can't pump and the light comes on (horrible design). check: www.car-parts.com and Ebay usually has some too. g-luck!

Did you see it?
Normally when someone claims this, it's very serious as it's hard to lie around. A hole in the block generally means that a piston rod went through it, and the evidence is extremely clear. I would take a good look for a used engine. That's not that old, and you might find a write-off somewhere with a decent engine in it. Unfortunately, I don't know if the 96 engine would fit in the 98, but 'rodeo02' may know, as well, a posting to planetisuzoo.com may be worth it too. Steve |

No, didn't see it, she called me about it, so I'm just telling you what I've been told. Is the long block the same or is it completely different? All the stuff is still good, if it just required fabricating some mounts I dont think that would be too much to deal with.
